Wine and Cheese

Are you a "cheesehead"? We are here at Touring & Tasting!

There's nothing better than a great cheese to pair with a great wine and the pairing is an art in itself. We hope to bring back many ideas from Sonoma County's California's Artisan Cheese Festival in March to compliment our fine wines. It used to be that great cheese was found only in Europe--I have returned more than once with my clothes smelling like Parmesan or Camembert de Normandie from the many pounds weighing down my luggage! But, in recent years, superb cheese is being made here, particularly in Northern California. So what better way to learn more about cheese and wine pairing from the artists themselves.

What is "artisanal cheese"? The American Cheese Society defines it as a cheese is produced primarily by hand, in small batches, with particular attention paid to the tradition of the cheesemaker’s art, and thus using as little mechanization as possible in the production of the cheese. The difference is kin to the difference between estate grown and bottled wine from hand-picked grapes and wine made by the millions of gallons. One can taste the care and attention to detail in an artisanal cheese or an estate bottle.
